José es un alumno
mexicano en sexto grado actualmente inscrito en mi clase de Artes Lingüísticos
en Español como así también en mi clase de Newcomers o Recién Llegados (Inglés
como Segunda Lengua). Viene de una
familia de cinco niños, y sus padres apoyan fuertemente a su vida escolar.
José llegó a Madison desde México en 2010
en pleno año escolar, y se inscribió en Stephens Elementary. Al inicio del ano en septiembre, hablaba muy poco
inglés, pero observé que su habilidad en la lectoescritura en español
era fuerte. Pedí autorización de
inscribirlo en Artes Lingüísticos en español para darle lugar a desarrollar su
idioma nativo y de transferir sus habilidades al inglés. José es un chico muy sano y muy
atlético. Hace delantero en su equipo de
futbol, y habla del fútbol sin
parar. Era muy tímido inicialmente en la
clase de Recién Llegados, y susurraba en inglés. Desde entonces, ha hecho mucho progreso en
todos los aspectos del aprendizaje. Es
un alumno muy agradable y simpático, y se lleva muy bien con sus compañeros de
clase, tanto los mexicanos como los de Nepal y China.

ReplyDeleteI'm supposed to comment on your oral literacy post about José. I hope I'm not looking in the wrong place, but I don't see anything yet. I'm not going to have the time to do this tomorrow - I think my comment is due Tuesday. Anyway, it sounds from your introduction like you picked a really interesting student to study. I wish you luck with him!

ReplyDeleteKristen you wrote that José is one of five children--what number is he? If any of his siblings are in school does he speak English with them? If he has older siblings do they help him with his English homework or does he assist his siblings? It is impressive that he is learning so quickly and I suspect the parental support component is a major factor.
